A search of a library at the University at Buffalo's suburban Amherst campus came up empty after school police received a call of a suspicious person entering the building, possibly with a gun.

University spokesman Joe Brennan says no one was found in the library, which had been evacuated. He says classes will resume on Wednesday.

University police issued the e-mail alert about Lockwood Memorial Library about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, and announced an hour later that evening classes were canceled.

The library, which is open to the general public, is the largest in the State University of New York system.

Police completed their search of the University at Buffalo's Lockwood Library Tuesday evening and found no sign of a gunman. The building on U-B's North Campus in Amherst was evacuated earlier in the day after reports of a suspicious person, possibly carrying a gun. There were no reports of injuries.

University authorities say the U-B Police Department completed its search of Lockwood Library around 7:45 Tuesday evening and no suspicious person was found. Officials say that there is no threat to the campus.

"No suspicious person was found. Police have determined there is no threat to campus. Classes will resume tomorrow," said Joseph A. Brennan, associate vice president of communications at UB.

The library remained closed Tuesday and U-B Police were made available to escort any student or staff member who may have left belongings in the building.

The library was evacuated and locked down shortly after 4:00 Tuesday afternoon after a surveillance camera image showed what appeared to be a person with a gun in the building.

U-B Police started evacuating the library around 4:30 pm. Amherst Police soon joined in the effort to secure the building and the surrounding area.

Brennan said the North Campus itself was never "locked down" but Tuesday evening activites were cancelled at the North Campus only.

Police conducted a room-by-room search of the six-story Lockwood Library. The search took about 4 hours.

Students were notified through text messages and e-mails and warned to stay away from the library during the search.

"The safety of our students, faculty and staff is always our primary concern," said UB Provost Satish Tripathi. "The university's campus alert and emergency response was enacted quickly and appropriately. Police patrols will be increased on the North Campus."

All classes and campus activities will resume normal schedule tomorrow Wednesday morning.
